Loughborough MP Brings Together Local Life Science Leaders in Loughborough
Dr Jeevun Sandher MP held a roundtable in Loughborough last week with local SME leaders from across the life sciences sector.
Senior representatives from 17 organisations met at Charnwood Campus, Science, Innovation and Technology Park to discuss current opportunities and challenges for the sector, including how to secure greater recognition for Loughborough’s strengths, promote collaboration and unlock more high-skilled jobs and business expansion in the region.
Life sciences are one of the UK’s fastest-growing industries. Loughborough already hosts a thriving cluster of life sciences businesses and research institutions, and local leaders say the town is well placed to lead future growth. They call for increased national support and visibility to help the area realise its full potential.
Dr Jeevun Sandher MP said:
“Loughborough is already leading the way for life sciences innovation, and it is vital that we continue to build on this strength. Our area is home to exceptional research expertise, innovative companies and world-leading talent, and I am determined to secure the investment and profile needed to support further growth.
It is vital that we attract high-quality jobs and growth to our area to raise living standards. I am proud to champion Loughborough’s life science sector, and I will continue to work to ensure that our community receives the backing it needs to succeed.”
Dr. Nik Kotecha OBE DL
Founder and Chair of The Randalsun capital Ltd, said:
“The life sciences sector contributes significantly to the health, wealth and economy of the UK and we’ve long been a world leader in healthcare innovation. In Leicestershire, a growing cluster of firms delivers across pharma, med-tech, D-tech and medicines manufacturing.
Bringing together business, academia and political leaders, shared priorities are clear: Government R&D investment must be proportionate, including specific investment in the East Midlands, and committed support to unlock the potential of scaling firms – with access to finance.”
Gosia Khrais, Director of Charnwood Campus, said:
“This meeting highlighted the remarkable strength, ambition, and collaboration within the East Midlands life sciences community. Here in Leicestershire — and in Loughborough in particular — we have a complete ecosystem: from world-class research and clinical expertise to advanced manufacturing and innovation-ready infrastructure. What we need now is joined-up support to turn that potential into delivery.
I am grateful to Dr. Jeevun Sandher MP for engaging directly with our industry leaders and for recognising the pivotal role this region can play in shaping the UK’s science and technology future.”
The Government launched a new Life Sciences Sector Plan this summer aimed at strengthening the UK’s position as a leader in medical research and innovation. The plan outlines significant investment to boost research and development, support manufacturing, and speed up access to new treatments. It is expected to create skilled jobs, attract investment, and enhance collaboration between the NHS, universities and industry.
