Charnwood Campus is pleased to announce the beginning of a collaborative relationship with the UK SCALE Centre at Loughborough University — part of the globally recognised MIT Global SCALE Network — focused on strengthening life sciences manufacturing, supply chains and industrial resilience across the East Midlands and beyond.

The discussions mark an important step towards building closer collaboration between industry, academia and innovation partners to support scalable growth, commercial impact and resilient manufacturing ecosystems within the UK life sciences sector.

Charnwood Campus recently welcomed Professor Jan Godsell and Jemma Jackson from the UK SCALE Centre, alongside Cat Brownlie from Argon & Co, for strategic discussions centred around the future of manufacturing-led innovation, ecosystem development and industrial scale-up capability.

The conversation reinforced a shared belief that future competitiveness in life sciences will rely not only on scientific excellence, but also on the ability to translate, manufacture, scale and deploy innovation through connected and resilient supply chains.

Areas explored during the discussions included:

  • Life sciences ecosystem development
  • Manufacturing and supply chain integration
  • Industrial scale-up capability
  • Circular economy and sustainable manufacturing opportunities
  • Collaborative funding and innovation partnerships
  • Strengthening regional and national resilience through connected ecosystems

Building on Charnwood Campus’ unique pharmaceutical and manufacturing heritage — from its origins as a major AstraZeneca research and manufacturing site to today’s community of global occupiers including Almac, Kindeva Drug Delivery and Solventum — the collaboration aims to help shape a distinctive manufacturing and deployment ecosystem for life sciences within the UK.

Malgorzata (Gosia) Khrais, Managing Director at Charnwood Campus, said: “This collaboration reflects the growing importance of connected manufacturing ecosystems in the future of life sciences innovation. Scientific discovery alone is no longer enough — we must also create the capability to manufacture, scale, distribute and deploy innovation effectively and resiliently.
Charnwood Campus has a unique heritage and infrastructure base rooted in pharmaceutical manufacturing and translational science, and we believe there is a significant opportunity to build stronger regional and national capability by connecting industry, academia and innovation partners more strategically. We are excited about the potential of this relationship with the UK SCALE Centre and look forward to exploring future collaborative initiatives that can support industrial resilience, commercial growth and long-term impact for the wider ecosystem.”

Further collaborative discussions and initiatives are expected to develop over the coming months as the relationship progresses.
