Charnwood Campus Science Innovation and Technology Park, Leicestershire recently hosted a dynamic three-day STEM engagement programme from 15–17 April, bringing together students, educators and industry to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators.
At the heart of the event was the globally recognised Merck Group Curiosity Cube™, delivered in partnership with the Charnwood Adventure Lab. Now in its third year at Charnwood Campus, the programme continues to grow in scale, ambition and impact. Over 300 students from schools across Leicestershire took part in hands-on scientific experiences designed to spark curiosity and build confidence in STEM subjects. This year’s programme placed a particular emphasis on addressing the gender gap in science, working predominantly with young girls to encourage them to see themselves as future scientists, innovators and leaders.
Students had the opportunity to work alongside real scientists, participate in experiments, and explore how scientific discovery translates into real-world impact. The programme also highlighted the region’s rich scientific heritage, including breakthroughs such as DNA fingerprinting at the University of Leicester and pioneering pharmaceutical innovations developed within the local ecosystem. A key highlight of the programme was a visit from local MP, Dr. Jeevun Sandher, whose presence reinforced the importance of sustained investment in science education, skills and regional innovation.

Dr. Jeevun Sandher MP said: “It was fantastic to visit the Curiosity Cube at Charnwood Campus and see first-hand how initiatives like this are inspiring young people across our community. Programmes that connect education with real-world science are vital for building the skills, confidence and ambition we need for the future. Investing in STEM education and regional innovation is essential not only for our local economy, but for the UK’s global leadership in science and technology.”
The initiative was delivered through strong collaboration between industry and education partners, including Merck Group, Almac Group, Kindeva Drug Delivery, the University of Leicester, and the Leicester and Leicestershire Careers Hub, aligned with the We Discover Industry programme. Gosia Khrais, Director of Charnwood Campus, said: “These three days have been truly inspiring. Seeing young people fully immersed in hands-on science, asking questions, experimenting and discovering what’s possible is exactly what initiatives like this are all about. At Charnwood Campus, we are committed to creating opportunities that connect education with real-world innovation. Programmes like the Curiosity Cube and our Adventure Lab play a vital role in building confidence, particularly among young girls, and showing them that a future in science is not only possible, but within their reach.
It’s through collaboration with our partners and community that we can create meaningful impact — helping to nurture the talent, skills and ambition that will shape the future of life sciences and innovation in our region.”
The event reflects Charnwood Campus’ ongoing commitment to supporting STEM education, regional skills development, and the UK’s life sciences ecosystem. By bringing together industry leaders, educators and young people, the programme demonstrates how collaboration can create meaningful pathways into science and innovation careers.
As the programme continues to evolve, Charnwood Campus remains focused on inspiring the next generation — ensuring that talent from across the region has the opportunity to thrive, contribute and lead in the future of science and technology.
